RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over a set period, schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked in various categories based on who recycles the most on a per capita basis. With each week’s reports and rankings, participating schools watch how their results fluctuate against other schools and use this to rally their campus communities to reduce and recycle more. In 2017, 320 participating schools recycled and composted 69.9 million pounds, which prevented the release of nearly 77,791 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2E) into the atmosphere. This is equivalent to preventing the annual emissions from 16,400 cars!

RecycleMania Kickstart Competition

Promoted by the NC State Stewards to kickstart RecycleMania, students living on campus (East, Central, West) will be competing against their fellow halls for the lowest diversion rate.

East CampusQuad (Becton, Berry/Bagwell) vs Nortauga (North, Watauga) vs Triad (Gold/ Syme/ Welch)

Central Campus: Tri-Towers (Bowen, Carrol, Metcalf) vs TOTA (Alexander, Owen/Turlington, Tucker)

RecycleMania Champions from East, Central, and West Campus will be chosen based on the highest diversion rate for the first 4 weeks of ReycleMania. Winners will receive a plaque that recognizes their recycling accomplishments.

RecycleMania Alpha Competition

for Residence Halls, Apartments, and Fraternity/Sorority Life Houses at NC State University

Students living on campus at NC State will determine what diversion rate they are living in and challenge other halls/houses on campus to recycling competitions. An overall champion, the Alpha, will be chosen based on the highest diversion rate at the end of the competition. The Alpha hall or house will receive a plaque that recognizes their recycling accomplishments.

2018 Competition Dates:  February 4 – March 31

Weights for the competition are based on the availability of mixed recycling dumpsters and landfill dumpsters.  Weeks for the competition begin each Sunday, starting February 4th. Results will be posted weekly. Please review the eligible locations below, as some buildings have shared sites.

This contest is exclusive to students of NC State University.

>There is no limitation in number of submissions per person.
>One winner per week will be selected to win.

>Winners will be selected by a panel of students and staff chosen by the office of Waste Reduction and Recycling.
